The Name Behind the Story
There is a great legend about why Badrinath was named so. It is said that Lord Vishnu had once been meditating beneath a berry tree in this valley. To shield him from the cold, Goddess Lakshmi turned herself into a tree, providing him shelter and warmth. That tree, Badri, also became the namesake of the area—Badrinath, or “Lord of Badri.”
