Adi Kailash & Om Parvat Yatra FAQs

Where is Adi Kailash located?

Adi Kailash parvat “chota kailash” is located in Uttarakhand, It is very near by Nepal border and Tibet border. It is located in Kumaon Himalayas regins. Adi Kailash is known as chhota Kailash by local peoples.

The Adi Kailash trek is not very challenging. It requires physical fitness and endurance due to little high altitudes approx 13K to 14K from Sea level. It is totally approx 9km trek from joling kong to jolingkong (jolingkong to parvati sarovar trek approx 2 kilometer & from parvati sarovar to dhan ki kheti trek approx 1 kilometer from dhan ki kheti to gauri kund trek approx 3 kilometer and return from gauri kund to jolingkong approx 3 kilometer trek.)

The maximum altitude of the Adi Kailash Parikrama by foot (horses are also available for an additional cost) is approximately 4,400 to 5,000 meters (about 14,000 to 15,000 feet).

Before the construction of the new road, trekking in Dharchula and walking yatra were permissible. However, the local administration does not permit anyone to climb Adi Kailash. People can trek to Gauri Kund and pay their respects to Lord Shiva, but climbing is prohibited.

The checking time may vary depending on the group size. The authorities will verify the visitors’ documents and allow them to pass. It is advisable to keep the documents ready to avoid delays.

Weather conditions during the Adi Kailash Om Parvat Yatra are unpredictable due to the mountainous terrain. The weather can change rapidly and without warning. Based on our experience, the best time to undertake the Adi Kailash Yatra is between May and June, and September to October. July and August are generally not recommended due to heavy rainfall and increased risk of landslides. While these months offer relatively stable weather, be prepared for cold temperatures, occasional snowfall, and rain showers throughout the trek.

There is no specific dress code for pilgrims and visitors to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat Yatra. However, visitors and others are advised to wear comfortable and modest clothing to respect the religious sentiments and local culture.

Visitors can click photographs of many sports while visiting Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. However, photography is prohibited on military bases and other sensitive areas.

You can buy fruits and other edibles all along from Kathgodam to Dharchula. Once you cross Dharchula, you will find it harder to get food. Please carry edibles beforehand and avoid fasting once you reach higher altitudes. You will need calories to ensure a safe journey.

You will not find restaurants or eating joints around Adi Kailash, Om Parvat and Dharchula. However, you will find pure sattvic food (no onion and garlic) at the guest houses/accommodations.

The person should be physically fit and have controlled sugar, blood pressure, and heart health. They should not have any heart diseases. A normal morning and evening walk of 2-3 kilometers is recommended based on our experience. Yoga, pranayama, and breathing exercises can be beneficial. Intense gym workouts or hard physical training are not necessary.

The most common route for the Adi Kailash Yatra begins in Delhi, India’s largest and nearest airport. Smaller flights connect Delhi to Pantnagar airport. Most Adi Kailash Yatris travel from Delhi to Kathgodam (Haldwani), approximately a 5-6 hour drive covering 280 kilometers. From Kathgodam, it’s another 4-5 hours to Pithoragarh, where you can visit Kainchi Dham, Jageshwar Temple, and Golu Devta Temple. A 2-hour drive takes you from Pithoragarh to Dharchula, the main entry point for the Adi Kailash Yatra. Here, you’ll obtain the necessary permits before embarking on the 3-4 hour, 40-kilometer journey to Napalchu. The final leg, from Napalchu to Jolingkong (40 kilometers, 3-4 hours), takes you to the base camp for Adi Kailash. This is where you can enjoy a clear view of the mountain. The entire yatra typically lasts 9-10 days. Alternatively, you can reach Adi Kailash and Om Parvat by helicopter.

The cost of an Adi Kailash Yatra varies depending on the package selected. Typically, packages include permit fees, transportation, accommodation, meals, and a guide. The approximate cost of the Adi Kailash Yatra package for a road trip is between 50,000 and 70,000 Indian Rupees, while a helicopter tour ranges from 1,00,000 to 1,50,000 Indian Rupees.

Additional expenses often arise from hiring horses or porters for the Adi Kailash Parikrama, Gaurikund, and Parvati Sarovar. Unexpected circumstances such as landslides, road closures, or political unrest can lead to increased costs due to extra accommodation, transportation, and meals. Personal expenses like shopping are additional factors to consider.

There is currently no official age limit set by the Indian government for the Adi Kailash Yatra. However, based on our experience, the high altitude and low oxygen levels at 14,000 to 15,000 feet may pose challenges for children under five years old.

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat Yatra. This permit is issued by the Dharchula SDM office and typically requires a 15-day advance application.

While it’s possible to apply for the Inner Line Permit upon reaching Dharchula, heavy crowds can lead to delays of one to two days. To avoid potential disruptions to your itinerary, we strongly recommend applying for the Adi Kailash Yatra permit through a travel agent like Travel Dukaan well in advance.

Travellers must have the Inner Line Permit to undertake the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat trip.

You will also need:

  • Original Aadhaar card
  • Medical fitness certificate from the Uttarakhand government
  • Police verification from Dharchula police station
  • Two recent color passport-sized photographs
  • A copy of your vaccination certificate
  • One emergency contact number from your family.

These are all mandatory documents for the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat Yatra.
